PODCAST 363: Phenomena, Suspiria & At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul


This week Forest & Rhiannon discuss a Dario Argento double feature. Forest kicks it off with Phenomena, starring a young Jennifer Connelly who can communicate with bugs. Rhiannon dives into the psychedelic witch world of Suspiria. Cory follows this up with whats is referred to as Brazil's first horror film At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, the first of the Coffin Joe films.

Together they lampoon the idea of "Straight Pride". Forest and Rhiannon discuss some recent viewing material on the new Criterion Streaming Service, and Cory visits a Footbag Tournament.

Re: Phenomena - Forest mentioned that Goblin supplied two tracks and the rest was by Claudio Simonetti. Simonetti was the founder of Goblin. He continued to work solo with Argento on different projects after Goblin disbanded.

Also, one of my favorite things about Dario Argento when he's on his game is that he can make compelling imagery within the context of events that are just bizarre or even uncomfortable. There's something truly emotional about that final scene of Jennifer Connelly hugging the chimp, despite be preceded by a woman getting killed by an ape with a straight razor.

If Rhiannon has seen TRAUMA, she might understand what I'm saying when I find that final embrace to be compelling, despite it being all sorts of icky under the surface. Oh, that Dario Argento.
